Agnes Hunt (1867-1948)
Agnes Hunt received a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) in 1926. Hunt suffered from osteomyelitis of the hip caused by childhood septicaemia and was subject to prejudice from Victorian society. This inspired her to open a convalescent home, Florence House, for ‘crippled’ children. Hunt consulted Robert Jones, a Liverpool surgeon, regarding her own orthopaedic problem, and Jones, on visiting the home and witnessing the innovative nursing care and open air treatment, was motivated to contribute to the medical treatment and return regularly.
Together in 1907, they built an operating theatre and in 1913 they introduced x-ray as a diagnostic tool. Florence House became a temporary home for wounded soldiers during World War I, for which the Memorial Fund provided funding to move the hospital to a large former military hospital facility.
