Sarah Swift (1854-1937)

Sarah Swift was hugely influential in the introduction of a state register of nurses and was a founder of the Royal College of Nursing.

When World War 1 broke out, Swift joined the St John’s Ambulance and British Red Cross Society whose Joint War Committee appointed her Matron-in-Chief of the Nursing Division. She said that her wartime work had opened her eyes to the chaotic state of nurses’ training and the urgent need for action to protect the interests of nurses. She approached Sir Arthur Stanley of the British Red Cross to support her in founding a College of Nursing to pursue educational goals and to promote the passing of parliamentary bills affecting nursing. The College was established in 1916 and three years later the Nurses’ Registration Act was passed.
