Annie Altschul (1919-2001)

A great influence on psychiatric nursing throughout her career, Annie Altschul received a CBE for her services to nursing in 1983. Altschul, born in Austria, had intended to study mathematics and physics in her home country, but was forced to flee Austria for Britain with her family in 1938.

She completed nursing training at Epsom County Hospital and began her nursing career working at Mill Hill Hospital, an emergency military mental hospital. Following the Second World War, Altschul resolved to teach nursing and graduated with a first class Psychology degree from Birkbeck College in 1952. Annie published her best-known work Patient-Nurse Interaction in 1972 and became a Professor of Nursing Studies at Edinburgh University in 1976.
