Edith Cavell (1865-1915)
Edith Cavell is celebrated, not only for her self-sacrifice during World War 1, but also for her role in bringing modern nursing techniques to Belgium. She trained as a nurse at the London Hospital under the renowned Matron Eva Luckes and in 1906 was asked to oversee Dr Depage’s new surgical and medical home in Brussels. The intention was for this home to be staffed by nuns, but run under modern British nursing techniques, led by Cavell. By 1914, she was ‘directrice’ to three hospitals, and had become a prominent figure in Belgium.
During World War I, Cavell converted the home into a Red Cross Hospital. After the Battle of Mons, Brussels was occupied by 20,000 Germans and many British and French soldiers had been rescued and hidden. Cavell was arrested and imprisoned for hiding British servicemen on route to Holland. Sentenced to death for high treason, Cavell was executed on 12 October 1915.
